Like all good science fiction, Doctor Who reflects our present day world. From the very beginning, this ethos has involved religion, but not just the predominant Christianity of 1960s England. Going back in time to meet The Aztecs was a masterstroke, for example, because it created the tension needed for drama – Barbara trying to impose her will on another culture, and moreover, on history. Since then, the Doctor and his friends have encountered many religions in the past and in the future. When Amy questions the role of the clerics in The Time of Angels, the Doctor says, “the Church has moved on.” This week, we are considering Clerics, Reverends, and High Priestesses.
