“I am more than just a Time Lord,” said the Seventh Doctor, just before he disposed of another powerful enemy. As a kid, I liked the idea of a master manipulator on the side of good, and it was his quickly emerging dark side that kept me hooked. Such a far cry from all those boring goody-goody heroes of the time! It’s that old adage – make complicated enough to keep the kids interested and simple enough for the adults to understand.
