I was thinking the other day how Ian Chesterton’s last regular story was The Chase. Then, when he did a cameo in The Power of the Doctor decades later, he was alongside Graham, played by Bradley Walsh who presents a gameshow called The Chase. This was Ian’s last story. Idle contemplations aside, this week, we’re looking at the male companions, those dashing heroes ready to put themselves in danger whenever necessary (well, most of them). One of my favourites, though, is Harry, a guy who tries but rarely gets it right… unless you’re standing on a landmine. Such was his impact that a BBC announcer referenced him prior to the Fourteenth Doctor story, Boom decades later. Now that’s what you call a lasting cultural impact. And I don’t know if you know this, but Joe Orton mentions Jamie in his diaries, having caught Doctor Who on the television. There may be more female than male companions, but when they do appear, the boys hold their own… Code Nine x
