Doctor Who is primarily a science fiction series, so it is only right that we consider the in-universe science. From the very beginning, the show has asked us to buy into various concepts – time travel and life on other planets being chief among them. In dramatic terms, these are essential for fuelling the drama, but in real life, they are subjects of proper research. Perhaps the most notable leaning towards science is the era of Christopher H Bidmead who pivoted Doctor Who towards a hard sci-fi form of storytelling – a far cry from the most recent fantasy-inclined take on the series.

On a personal note, it was in part down to Doctor Who that I became a doctor myself. I remember watching Ghost Light and understanding the running theme of experiments and scientific enquiry in the subtext, so feature science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) in this blog is particularly gratifying.
